Welcome back to The Fitter @ 50 Show blog with Nat and Marks – where we’re showing you (well, Marks is) what to use in your baking as a sugar substitute. You might already have it in your pantry.
Not familiar with us yet? We’re your favourite team for all things real-life wellness – where we break down the how, when, and what to eat for 20 pound sustainable weight loss as we age together. (And do it with a good laugh or two—because why not?)
This episode? We’re going on a date. (Yep. The fruit. Not the wine-and-candlelight kind, though we do love those too.)
Why Dates Deserve a Spot in Your Kitchen – and Your Baking
Marks takes the reins in this episode to show us what he actually does in the kitchen what he uses as a sugar substitute in his recipes – it’s impressive, smart, and totally doable even if your idea of “cooking” is reheating last night’s takeout.
Turns out, dates aren’t just chewy little nuggets of natural sweetness. They’re good for your heart, brain, bones, and (drumroll) yes—your bathroom habits too. 💩 (We said what we said)
“Pooping is a big thing in our house.” – Nat.
Yep, we went there.
But seriously—dates are packed with fiber, loaded with natural caramel-like sweetness, and (here’s the best part) they help cut out added sugar without cutting out joy. If you’re looking into sugar substitutes that actually taste good and support your health goals, this is your sign.
DIY Date Puree: The Hero of Healthy Baking & Sugar Substitutes
Here’s the gist of what Marks does:
- Soak a few cups of dates in boiling water
- Let them soften up (go on, give them a spa moment)
- Blend with a hand blender until smooth and dreamy
- Store and use as a sweetener in muffins, banana bread, power bombs, cookies, or even a warm bowl of oatmeal (go ahead and ditch the brown sugar)
This is sugar substitutions done right. No complicated rules. No weird powders. Just real food with real flavor that keeps your sweet tooth satisfied. Full recipe is in the video description.
From Cycling Fuel to Muffin Magic 🧁
Back in the day, when Marks was training for long-distance rides, he turned to date puree instead of the packaged gels and processed protein bars you can buy. It gave him the energy boost he needed – without the long list of ingredients .
Now? It’s a fridge staple in their house, and Juliet (our oldest daughter) whips up muffins, banana bread, and who-knows-what-else with it—no sugar added!
If you’ve got a sweet tooth but hate the crash-and-burn of sugar, or if you’ve tried every kinda of “healthy swap” out there and still feel deprived… date puree might just be your new BFF. It’s one of the better sugar substitute out there—and it actually works in real life.
